Your Higher Self is always with you. Author’s own image created on Nightcafe
Definition
We’ll start with creating a definition of what the higher self is. It goes by different names and this is not an exhaustive list, but here’s some of them…
Great Spirit, soul, higher consciousness, true authentic self, spirit, subconscious, God, or god aspect, ascended self.
Dolores Cannon used the word ‘subconscious’, SC for short, although this differs from the standard definition of the subconscious. I tend to use Higher Self and sometimes Spirit. (I will also refer to the Higher Self as HS in this article to save writing it out every time).
The HS is the larger soul aspect of you. A metaphor can be helpful, such as the one given by Bashar when he described the physical body as the pinky finger of the larger spirit. Although the difference in size may not be accurate (the spirit is vast and infinite), a metaphor like this helps us see that we are part of something much bigger and that many of our concerns in this physical life are of small significance compared to the greater purpose of our spirit.
Definitions vary, but our body has other non-physical bodies aligned with it. Moving outwards from the physical body is an etheric body, emotional body, mental body, and spiritual body. Beyond that we are all connected to everything, including Source, or God as some prefer.
Higher Dimensions
The physical body resides in this three-dimensional world that we all experience with our five ordinary senses. We have other senses that we may call the sixth sense. Intuition is one. The patriarchy has tended to devalue intuition which is seen as a more feminine characteristic, but we are moving into a time when intuition can be your superpower.
More about that later.
While our physical body resides in the 3rd and 4th dimensions, the spirit can reside in higher dimensions and this is where intuitive nudges come from. When we sleep, we all leave the body in spirit form whether we remember it or not. The ego mind tends to dominate the physical person’s actions in the 3D world, however it is limiting and fear-based and it leads to a life lived away from its true potential.
Spiritual Growth
As we grow spiritually, we become more sensitive to intuition which is one way our Higher Self communicates with us. Some people experience physical nudges like a tap on the shoulder, noises, or a voice in their head. Other signs may appear in your life as coded messages, e.g. dreams, coincidences, symbols, seeing numbers repeatedly, déjà vu, animals appearing, the words or actions of other people and so on. It is up to us to pay attention.
Establish a Link
You can grow your link with the higher self through the intention to do so. Intention is a very important first step. Putting aside time to create that link is important, ideally every day. It’s essentially you-time, time with yourself, your highest self. Isn’t that worthy of some of your time? If there is time for things like work, shopping, watching TV, or doom-scrolling, then it shouldn’t be difficult to make some time for the HS. The Higher Self only asks for a few minutes of your time to check-in.
What does communication with the Higher Self look like?
No one size fits all. As someone who practised with organised religion for over twenty years, I know how daily practice can become a banal chore when you are expected to do the same rituals day in and day out. The lack of enthusiasm and inspiration in such rituals, I believe, makes them less beneficial than they could be if we were allowed to be more innovative and creative. Boredom severed my link with Spirit/HS except for occasional inspiring moments. I was too reliant on experiencing the link through the road laid out by people who lived long before my time.
The question is, how would you like to connect to your higher self? The relationship will change over time. In the beginning, people who are new to this might feel that they aren’t getting anything, not seeing, hearing, or feeling anything in particular. It is likely that the conscious mind will be active with doubts and thoughts like, ‘this is silly’, or ‘there’s no such thing…’ So it’s helpful to reassure the ego mind that all is well and ask it to take a break and go to sleep for a bit while you do some spiritual practice. I imagine my ego mind as a slightly portly middle-aged guy who likes explaining and criticising everything. He’s a bit of a know-it-all. When I want him to quieten down, I put a dummy in his mouth and tuck him into bed all cosy where he can take a nap.
Here are a few suggestions for connecting to the higher self:
1. Asking that your Higher Self comes close so you can communicate.
2. Use a pendulum or dowsing rods to ask Yes and No questions of your HS. Begin by establishing with your pendulum or rods what signifies a Yes, what signifies a No, and what signifies No-Answer or Neutral.
3. Similarly to the above, Maureen St Germain in her book, Opening The Akashic Records, suggests a method for asking your higher self about how you will communicate a sign or signal for Yes, No, or No-Answer. Some people are shown a tingle of energy in a part of the body, e.g. Yes might be a tingle in the right hand, No a tingle in the left hand. I used this method in the past and got Yes as a light flash on my right, and No as a light flash to the left, Neutral or No-Answer was no light, or one in the middle. I had to do this with my eyes closed which was the only disadvantage. Set aside enough time to receive the instructions from your HS to set this method up and it may be helpful to read Maureen’s book.
4. Meditating, watching thoughts go by mindfully without reacting, and breathing slowly and deeply until you feel relaxed helps your connection by altering your conscious state from Beta to a light trance (Alpha) or a deeper one (Theta). Once you are relaxed, ask your HS a question and listen for the answer. Any critical voices or harsh voices will not be your HS. Gently but firmly tell these that they are not the ones you wish to speak with. The Higher Self’s tone is often matter-of-fact but never nasty. Keep trying with a simple question, often the first thing that comes to mind is from the HS. Don’t expect the voice of God to boom into your mind, it may just sound like you. If you have to take time to think of the answer, then it’s most likely the ego. If it doesn’t work the first time, take a rest and try again later. Insistence and pushing for an outcome never help.
5. If you prefer help to connect to the HS, there are now many ‘quantum hypnotherapy’ methods for this. I can personally vouch for Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique (QHHT) and Beyond Quantum Healing (BQH) which both invite the higher self and ask questions of the HS. In QHHT, the HS is formally invited at an opportune time in the hypnosis. In BQH, the HS is invited from the start along with guides and angels, future ascended self etc. Past, future, or parallel lives are often visited in these sessions to help understand or heal this life. They may also bring information to enhance this life, or conceptual visions to help people on their spiritual path. Clients have a list of questions, around ten is ideal, which the hypnotherapy practitioner asks of the HS. This is done by having the person in an alpha or ideally theta level trance, and asking the HS to speak through them. It is similar to channelling, however here we are just channelling our own self. I had a session yesterday with a relatively new practitioner practising on me. I experienced a strong connection with spirit and a mind-blowing experience of the vastness of spirit through visiting a past life as a Neolithic priestess. Having had many session now, I can never doubt the power of this method and these sessions continue to surprise me.
6. For those not keen on the idea of hypnotherapy, there is another option called Quantum Connect which comes from the same stable as BQH and was developed by Candace Craw-Goldman. It involves playing creative imaginative games by answering questions quickly without taking time to think of the answer. The idea is to bypass the conscious mind and access the HS that way. There are often symbolic aspects to interpret from these interactions similar to dreamwork. These imaginative games also have their own deeper meanings that reveal things like how you see yourself, or how your mind operates in relation to right and left, or feminine and masculine.
7. Going out into nature, taking long walks, preferably alone, allows you time to connect with the spirit of the planet and ground yourself. By disconnecting from nature, we as humans disconnected from our higher spirit. The wisdom of indigenous tribes comes from their constant connection and respect for the planet and its spirit. Native Americans often speak of the Great Spirit, which refers to their connection to the planet earth and their own higher self which are ultimately all one and the same.
8. Continuing from the above, you may have heard of earthing (walking barefoot) which is good for the human body as it is for electrical appliances that have to be grounded to prevent destruction from stuck energy. You can intentionally ground yourself by imagining roots going from your feet into the earth at any time as it’s not always possible to go barefoot and walk in nature. Visualising the memory of a beautiful natural place when stuck in the office helps. The imagination can’t be underestimated. Nature brings us closer to our true self which is always connected to us, no matter how disconnected we are. Connecting with the earth and sun like an antennae will help your communication with your HS. Meditation can also be more powerful in natural places.
9. Some places have a powerful energy and can help with your connection. Ancient sites built on energy lines may appeal to some people for gaining a greater spiritual connection although places like this can be challenging if you live on or near them 24/7. I personally found that living as a layperson in a monastery for nearly two years brought a lot of highs and lows. I didn’t know at the time, that I was living on a significant ley line. Many churches and sacred places were built on energy nodes and ley lines that were used by earlier Neolithic and Bronze Age peoples for their shrines so you may feel a certain spiritual energy and vibration in these places. Or you may just use your own intuition to find a good place to connect, e.g. somewhere on a hill with an expansive feeling and a nice view.
10. Sometimes, an exhausting day of work, or an energetic exercise session, can help you to drop the barriers that might normally be there and so this may be a beneficial time to connect.
11. Gratitude is often mentioned, and it does help in so many ways. Appreciation of the good things and even the ‘bad’ things for the lessons they bring, always raises your vibration and brings you closer to your HS.
12. Requesting a connection and then writing fast without thinking may help you access the wisdom of the HS through a writing sprint. No stopping to think or worry about grammar or spelling!
13. As above but try making a recording of yourself speaking.
14. As 12, but draw freely, doodles, scribbles, whatever comes to mind, maybe close your eyes. You don’t have to be an artist. Then have fun trying to decipher any coded messages that you feel inspired to see.
15. Shamanic journeying is another method used to speak with guides and the Higher Self. It can be learned through Michael Harner’s book The Way of the Shaman, or a short course. In this case, the sound of drums is used to help create a trance and bypass the conscious mind. Shamanic journeys can be wonderfully colourful journeys into imagination based on a lower, middle, and upper world. You don’t need real drums as there are drumming tracks specifically for this on Youtube. If you have a drum, you can also drum for yourself while lying down and wearing an eye mask. I find this makes for an interesting experience as the drum vibrations can be felt in the body.
16. Some people become creative and intuitive when interacting with water, bathing, showering, or even swimming. Clean running water helps wash away stagnant or dark energy that may hold us back from connecting with our true self. And water holds information and emotions. Bless your water and it will bless you.
17. Oracle cards are a great way to ask questions and gain guidance from the HS. Again ask sensible questions with a good intention for all. It’s best not to abuse the cards by over-asking as then a trickster energy may come in and give some funny answers. I personally love Colette Baron-Reid’s Wisdom of The Oracle. There are many to choose from. Why not let your intuition choose for you?
18. Spiritual books are yet another fantastic way of communicating with the HS. My most recent find was in a second-hand bookshop. I asked my HS for a helpful book. It took ten minutes for me to find it, but it has become one of my all-time favourites and I intend to write a review of it on this blog soon. Asking a question or asking for help and inspiration and then opening a random page can also be a helpful way to use books in a similar way to oracle cards.
19. Spiritual friends cannot be underestimated. Serendipitous conversations with others of a similar tribe can lead to lightbulb moments and it is always wonderful to share. Even an introvert who lives in a spiritual desert can now connect with others online. While we don’t want to spend too much time scrolling, the internet has become a great way to connect, share, and hear the stories of others on the same journey.
20. Crystals can help with connecting and communicating with your higher self, guides, angels etc. Programming a crystal by telling it of your intention makes it more powerful. Any crystal that you are intuitively guided to will work. Hold them in your hand while meditating, or use as guided, e.g. place on the third eye. Suggestions are: Amethyst, selenite, apophyllite, kunzite, angelite, clear quartz, rose quartz, and smoky quartz. These are but a few.
This is not an exhaustive list and there are probably many more ways to enhance your HS connection.
I personally use a few different ones most of the time:
1. A spiritual practice based on the book LightWorker 101 by Erin Werley. This is used mainly for clearing and cleaning energy and creating a space to meditate and connect with the HS, guides, etc
2. Shamanic journeying
3. BQH and QHHT sessions
4. Quantum Connect
5. ‘Flow’ writing
6. Intuitive recordings
7. Meditation
8. Dowsing
9. Oracle cards
10. Reading spiritual books
11. Talking with spiritual friends
12. Connecting to nature and ancient sites of energy.
Reasons You Aren’t Getting Any Answers When You Try to Connect
Asking trivial questions that you already intuitively know the answer to
Something is blocking your connection so choose a different method
You are getting answers but you are refusing to believe them, or you have failed to act on answers given and have chosen to follow the ego mind instead, endeavour to follow the advice when you ask again
This is not something you need to know at this time
It is not for your highest good, and/or is harmful to others
You have free will and need to decide for yourself on some things (it’s not healthy to require an answer from higher-up for everything you do)
Don’t put spirit to the test. I once knew someone who said they were not going to lift a finger to do anything because everything they did turned bad. They wanted God to act for them. The resulting self-neglect sadly only led them to a lonely end to their life and an earlier death than what might have been.
Doubts
People often doubt their connection once it’s made. We all think we are making it up at some point, especially if we feel we already knew this on some level (yes, that’s because we did! We are our HS after all). All things are made up anyway; this is a created universe which we are all involved in creating all of the time.
Sometimes it’s true that some of what comes through may be the interference of the ego mind, but you can always give the ego mind a job if it is getting in the way. I sometimes personify that ego mind as a middle-aged man as you saw earlier (sorry middle-aged men but feel free to imagine a middle-aged woman for yours). If the ego interferes in a session, I will ask it to be the cameraperson and film everything and to do this silently without speaking.
Be Inspired
I would like to thank my HS for helping me to write this article at surprising speed today. Before I began, I didn’t feel like I wanted to write it and asked for help and inspiration.
Our intuition and imagination are beautiful things that have been derided in favour of analysis and ‘facts.’ How different it might have been if we had grown up on a planet where imagination, creativity, and intuition were nurtured and encouraged when they came to us in a natural flow as children.
Great people such as Einstein knew that their eureka moments came through intuitions and imaginative creativity and not through following robotic rules and systems.
We are now in a time when we can once again celebrate these values and begin to actively think outside the box the matrix has put us in. Let’s go forth, be playful, and co-create with our Great Spirit!
